In Durham, NC, organizers, social service providers, clergy members, people who are great at fundraising, and so many others have been building power together to #FreeBlackMamas and #EndMoneyBail. Hear firsthand from organizers who led this year’s Black Mama's Bail Out how the work of NBO partner organizations Southerners on New Ground is transforming the community in Durham, NC.


Historically, Durham has been a vibrant economic center for Black people. But the influx of gentrification over the last couple of decades has fed into the over-policing of Black and poor folks in the community. Philadelphia, PA, is the poorest large city in the U.S., resulting in the displacement and criminalization of long-time residents amidst gentrification. Today, tune in to the first episode of #NBOInTheStreets Philly to hear how the Philadelphia Community Bail Fund is doing political engagement organizing to #FreeBlackMamas and reduce the pretrial detention population in their ever-changing landscape.


In 2017, multiple Philly-based organizing groups found themselves with the perfect conditions to build power in their ongoing bail fights and began what is now known as the Philadelphia Community Bail Fund (@phillybailout). In this closing Philly episode of #NBOInTheStreets, hear firsthand how the upcoming DA’s race and the first Black Mama’s Bail Out was leveraged to win.

Based in California, Essie Justice Group is a loving and powerful community of women with incarcerated loved ones fighting to end mass incarceration. Despite being organized in a state with the highest average bail amount in the country, Essie members and organizers have been dedicated to #FreeBlackMamas in the Bay Area and Los Angeles since the first bail out. California is the nation’s leader in bail amounts, with their median amount of $50,000 being 5x the national median. For Essie Justice Group, this meant navigating unique obstacles to identify mamas and acquiring enough resources to participate in #BlackMamasBailOuts. Tune in to this episode of #NBOInTheStreets to hear more about the financial and collateral costs of criminalization and the work to end it!
